Fear is not an altogether bad thing. To fear walking in certain parts of a large city at night is smart. To fear a rattlesnake is wise. I have heard people say, “Love casts out ALL fear.” This is not true and would be a terrible thing if it was.
The fear of God and of judgment is a smart thing. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” This kind of fear may lead us to repentance. Then, we discover the marvelous love of God by which this fear dissipates.
In 1 John, we learn of the love of God being perfected in us. That is, we come to learn how much God loves us; we in turn love God and find outlet for that love by loving one another. This kind of love casts out fear of death or judgment for we have placed full confidence in God.
